🌙 The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah: The Most Blessed Days of the Year

Fill Your Heart and Tongue with the Remembrance of Allah 🤍 Published on IslamicFamilyTree.com | Islamic Reminders & Spiritual Growth

Have you ever noticed how certain times of the year just feel different? The air feels a little lighter. Your heart feels a bit closer to Allah. The prayers you make feel deeply personal and sincere.

That is exactly what the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are. Think of them as a massive window of divine mercy—one so wide and generous that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called them the greatest days of the entire year.

If you’ve been waiting for a fresh start, looking for a reason to reconnect with your faith, or just needing a gentle reminder to slow down and breathe, this is your sign. This is your moment.

What Makes These 10 Days So Special?

We know something is incredibly important when Allah ﷻ swears an oath by it. In Surah Al-Fajr, He says:

“By the dawn, and by the ten nights…” — (Quran 89:1-2)

Great scholars of the past, like Ibn Kathir, explained that these “ten nights” are the very days of Dhul Hijjah we are entering now. When the Creator of the universe pauses to highlight a specific time, it’s our cue to stop, listen, and pay attention.

The Prophet ﷺ made their value incredibly clear when he said:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” — (Sahih Bukhari)

The companions were surprised and asked, “Not even jihad in the path of Allah?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Not even jihad in the path of Allah—except for a man who goes out with his life and wealth and returns with neither.”

Let that sink in for a second. The everyday good deeds we do right now hold the potential for more reward than some of the most heroic acts of worship in Islam. And the best part? These gates of mercy are wide open to every single one of us.

Why Does Allah Love These Days So Much?

These ten days hold a unique kind of spiritual energy because they bring all the pillars of our faith together at once: Hajj, fasting, charity, prayer, sacrifice, and deep remembrance. Right now, millions of hearts across the globe are moving in the exact same direction—toward Makkah, toward gratitude, and toward surrender.

And here is the most beautiful part: you don’t have to be on Hajj to experience this. While the pilgrims are standing on Mount Arafah, the mercy of Allah is descending on the entire world. Every single one of us gets to share in the blessings.

Real, Simple Ways to Make the Most of These Sacred Days

You don’t need to completely upend your life to catch these blessings. It’s about small, consistent, intentional actions.

1. 🗣️ Let Your Tongue Stream with Zikr and Takbeer

The easiest way to connect with Allah right now is to keep His name on your lips. Let it become the background music of your day—while you’re driving, cooking dinner, folding laundry, or winding down in bed.

Keep it simple: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ Allahu Akbar, Alhamdulillah, SubhanAllah, La ilaha illallah

Or recite the full Takbeer that Muslims have shared for centuries: اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ، وَاللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلّٰهِ الْحَمْدُ “Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no deity besides Allah. And Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.”

Try not to just repeat the words mechanically. Let them mean something to you. Every time you say “Allahu Akbar,” remind yourself that Allah is bigger than your current worries, bigger than your anxieties, and bigger than any hurdle in your way.

2. 🌅 Fast the First Nine Days (Especially the Day of Arafah)

Fasting during this time is incredibly rewarding, but the absolute crown jewel is the 9th day—the Day of Arafah. The Prophet ﷺ told us:

“Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” — (Sahih Muslim)

Think about that generosity. One day of fasting wipes out two years of mistakes. If you can’t manage to fast all nine days, please try your absolute best not to miss the 9th. Even if your intentions are there but your health isn’t, remember that Allah rewards the sincerity of your heart just as much as the action itself.

3. 🤲 Have a Real, Raw Conversation with Allah (Dua)

These are the days when prayers are answered. Don’t let them pass by in silence, and don’t rely on rehearsed scripts if they don’t move you. Sit down, raise your hands, and talk to Allah like He is right there listening—because He is.

Tell Him what hurts. Ask Him for the things you think are impossible. Pray for your family, your friends, and the millions of people around the world who are hurting or facing oppression. Find a quiet corner, pour your heart out, and let yourself be vulnerable.

4. 📖 Read the Quran with Your Heart, Not Just Your Eyes

This is a wonderful time to dust off your Quran and rebuild your relationship with it. Don’t worry about rushing through pages just to finish a chapter. It is so much better to read just one page—or even a few verses—and actually sit with the meaning. Let the words heal you. Open it because you genuinely need the guidance, and let it speak to you.

5. 💸 Give Generously, Even If It’s Small (Sadaqah)

Charity during these ten days has a massive ripple effect. It doesn’t have to be a fortune. Buying a meal for someone, donating a small amount online to a cause you care about, or helping a neighbor carry groceries all count. As the Prophet ﷺ beautifully reminded us, giving charity never actually decreases your wealth; it only brings blessings into it.

6. 🐑 Honor the Sacrifice (Qurbani)

If you are financially able, participating in Qurbani (the sacrifice on Eid) is a beautiful way to connect with the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and his ultimate trust in Allah. If doing it individually is tough, consider pooling resources with family or contributing to a collective charity sacrifice. It’s all about the spirit of giving back and remembering what true devotion looks like.

A Gentle Reality Check: Don’t Let This Slip Away

If we’re being honest, these days come and go so fast. We’ve all had years where we were too busy, too distracted, or just too tired, and Dhul Hijjah slipped right past us.

But if you are reading this today, your time hasn’t run out. It doesn’t matter if you’re reading this on day one, day five, or the morning of Arafah. Start right now, exactly where you are.

One sincere prostration, one genuine tear, or one heartfelt “SubhanAllah” can completely shift the weight of your scales on the Day of Judgment. Your tongue is a powerful tool for good—use it to bring peace to your soul.

A Prayer for All of Us 🤲

May Allah ﷻ allow our hearts to fully wake up to the blessings of these ten days. May He accept every word of remembrance we utter, every prayer we make, every tear we shed, and every small act of kindness we give. For anyone who feels lost, may these days be the turning point that brings them back home to Him.

May He grant Hajj to everyone whose heart aches for it, and may He write down the full reward of Hajj for those who couldn’t make the journey this year.

Amin, Ya Rabb al-Alamin. 🤲✨
